Globus Celebrates Exascale Day
October 18, 2024 | Susan Tussy
As we join in the celebration of Exascale Day on this 18th day of October 2024 Globus has helped researchers move over 2.8 exabytes of data. It took over ten years before we hit the one exabyte (EB) mark, just over four years to cross the 2 EB line, and just one year later, in 2024, we are rapidly approaching the 3 EB milestone.
Scientific instruments like next generation sequencers and cryo-electron microscopes are generating 10s of terabytes of raw data daily—and even more if you factor in necessary downstream analysis. Secure, reliable, efficient management of these data and computation resources is essential, and we currently help over 600,000 users worldwide do just that.
A zettabyte may seem far off, but the broad adoption of new tools and techniques like AI/ML, combined with increasingly powerful compute resources and more cross-discipline and multi-institutional collaboration, all make it possible to solve new grand challenges and advance scientific discoveries faster than ever before.
